More businesses, organizations and even individuals are taking advantage of all the benefits of the cloud. As recently as last year, more than half of businesses in the U.S. were using cloud solutions; and already, 32% of the public consider the cloud to be the future of data storage and serving. By the end of 2014, it’s estimated that American businesses will have spent an amazing $13 billion on cloud hosting services!

But what if you’re completely new to the concept of cloud computing and cloud hosting? Don’t worry — the three following facts should serve as a good introduction to put you on your way toward understanding cloud computing solutions like an expert:

There are two types of hosting services: public and private

Many people know about the biggest public cloud computing providers of today’s market: Google’s Cloud Platform, Amazon’s Web Services and Microsoft’s Azure. When a business pays for server space with one of these providers, they share the server with other businesses and organizations that pay for the service. In contrast, a private cloud service provider allots a dedicated server for each of their customers, increasing security for their customers’ data and information.

The “cloud” is actually a remote server that a business or individual pays to use

When a business decides to store its data on the cloud, the data isn’t stored somewhere up in the sky or on a satellite somewhere — the data is actually stored on a remote server outside the business’ offices. The information stored on the cloud can be accessed from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection, and at any time of the day, opening up widened opportunities for telecommuting.

Hosting one’s software and data on the cloud is cost-efficient

As stated before, storing a business’ data in the cloud creates expanded possibilities for telecommuting, or working from home. This means that workers can complete their work from anywhere, at any time, increasing efficiency and productivity. The cost of renting out cloud server space is also much less expensive than purchasing a server on one’s own.
